What Is a Sleep Cycle?

A sleep cycle is a natural pattern your brain and body go through while sleeping. Each cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes and includes stages of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Most people complete 4 to 6 sleep cycles per night. Waking up in the middle of a deep sleep stage is what causes that groggy, disoriented feeling known as sleep inertia.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your desired wake-up time or bedtime.
  2. The calculator will show you the best times to go to sleep or wake up.

Tips for Better Sleep

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
  • Avoid screens (phone, TV) for at least 30 minutes before bed.
  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
  • Avoid caffeine after 2 PM.
  • Try a short relaxation routine — reading, stretching, or deep breathing.
💡 Tip: It takes most people about 14 minutes to fall asleep. This calculator accounts for that time automatically so your results are more accurate.
